Why your church should be on social media

From Steve Fogg, Seminar Facilitator

In my 20 years in working as a creative communications professional, one constant was the Monday morning conversation around either the water cooler or the Espresso machine about what people did on the weekend.

Around seven years ago, everything changed.

You no longer have to wait until that mid-morning tea break to hear what the latest social news was. You can now share your life online -instantly. Geography no longer matters. Your friends can be on the other side of the world. That news isn’t limited to your friends, but friends of friends can catch up on what you are up to. Your news has the potential to become viral.

Enter the social media revolution.

Facebook now has over 1 billion users worldwide. In Australia, there are now over 11 million users, that’s 51% of the population. Then there are other social networks such as YouTube, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest and Instagram to name a few.

In the New Testament, the marketplace, the temple and synagogues were some of the major opportunities for the gospel to be shared and spread. Now in the 21st Century, the revolution of social media provides your church with the same opportunity. Not just for church leaders, but for your whole congregation to share the good news of Jesus Christ with their friends.

Of course, nothing is better than face-to-face relationships, but social media helps people share their story to more people in a different way.

Each person on Facebook has an average of around 160 friends that they can share their thoughts with. This is an opportunity that is too good to miss.

I’ve served as the Communications Pastor at Crossway church in Melbourne for six years now, and we recognise that social media is a key strategy in contacting and connecting the wider community to share the Good news of Jesus.

Has your church taken up this once-in-a-generation opportunity? This opportunity isn’t just for churches. If you are a para-church organisation the same opportunity is before you. Don’t be left on the sidelines. Join the digital conversation.

Join me in one-day social media seminar here at Crossway where I’ll be sharing how your church leadership and your church can leverage this opportunity.
